Getting your turf measurements right is the first step to a beautiful new lawn. Don't worry, it's easier than you think! Whether you're ordering turf for a small garden or a larger lawn, our calculator will help you work out exactly how many square metres and lawn rolls you need.

Using the Turf Calculator: Your 3-Step Guide to Ordering

  1. Select Your Shape - Choose from Square/Rectangle, Circle, or Custom Shape depending on your lawn layout.

  2. Input Measurements - Enter your lawn measurements in metres, feet or yards, after using a tape measure to measure your lawn

  3. Click Calculate - Get your total square metres. It is always worth adding an extra 10% to this to allow for any wastage.

Roughly How Big Is My Lawn?

We always recommend getting out a tape measure and accurately measuring your lawn; however, for a quick approximation, you can use the map tool above to mark out the boundary of your lawn, and it will provide you with an estimated m².

Essential Guide: How to Measure Your Lawn for Turf

Knowing how to measure for turf properly ensures you order exactly what you need – no more, no less. Here's everything you need to know about measuring different lawn shapes:

Measuring Rectangular and Square Lawns

Rectangular and square lawns are the most common garden shapes, making them the easiest to measure. Here's what you need to do:

  • Use a tape measure to find the length of your lawn (the longest side)

  • Measure the width (the shortest side) at its widest point

  • Multiply length × width to get your square metres

  • For example: 5m wide × 10m long = 50 square metres

  • Don't worry about being millimetre-perfect; rounding to the nearest 10cm is absolutely fine.

Top Tip: If your rectangular lawn has flower beds or patio areas, measure the full rectangle first, then subtract those areas afterwards.

Measuring Circular and Curved Areas

Circular lawns and curved gardens look stunning but can seem tricky to measure. Here's the simple approach:

  • Find the radius by measuring from the centre point to the edge
    • If you can't find the centre, measure the full diameter (widest point across) and divide by 2

    • For oval or curved areas, use the longest and shortest measurements as your guide

  • Multiply this number by itself

  • Multiply this by π (Pi ≈ 3.14)

For curved or irregular circular gardens, it's better to slightly overestimate than underestimate. That's why we recommend adding an extra 10% for wastage allowance.

Measuring Irregular and Complex Shapes

Got an irregularly shaped garden? No problem! The trick is to break it down into manageable pieces:

  • Divide your lawn into simple shapes – rectangles, squares, triangles, or circles

  • Measure each section separately using the methods above

  • Calculate the area for each shape individually

  • Add them all together for your total square metres

For example, if your lawn is L-shaped, split it into two rectangles. Measure and calculate each one, then add the results together. It sounds complicated, but once you start, you'll see how straightforward it really is!

Don't Forget Wastage: Why We Recommend 10% Extra

You might notice that we keep recommending adding 10% to your measurements, and that's completely intentional. Here's why this wastage allowance is so important when ordering turf:

  • Cutting around obstacles: Patios, trees, flower beds, and paths all require careful cutting, which creates off-cuts

  • Shaping and trimming: Getting perfect edges and curves means you'll trim away some turf

  • Avoiding visible seams: Extra turf lets you position lawn rolls strategically so seams are less noticeable

  • Minor damage or issues: Occasionally, a small section might get damaged during laying – having extra means you're covered

  • Future repairs: Any leftover turf can be kept for patching small areas later

Trust us on this one – running out of turf halfway through your project is frustrating and can delay the job. A 10% buffer gives you peace of mind and ensures you have everything you need to create that perfect lawn.

Professional Tip: For particularly complex gardens with lots of curves and obstacles, consider ordering slightly more. It's much easier to have a little left over than to make an emergency second order!
