Supporting Our Local Community: The Bombed Out Church

Here at Online Turf, we believe that vibrant and durable turf can do more than just look good.

A good-quality lawn can positively contribute to a local community by creating a welcoming and functional space that can be used for different events and community projects.

That’s why, for the second year in a row, we are proud to have donated our Rye Gold Turf  to one of Liverpool’s most iconic spaces: St Luke’s Church, better known as the Bombed Out Church.

About the Bombed Out Church

St Luke’s Church has been a part of Liverpool for a very long time. Its construction officially started in 1826 and it was first opened to the public in 1832. It then functioned as a regular church until it was damaged during the May Blitz in 1941. According to National Museums Liverpool: ‘The May Blitz on Liverpool, 1–7 May 1941, was the most concentrated series of air attacks on any British city area outside London during the Second World War’. During this time, the German Luftwaffe dropped a total of 870 tonnes of high explosives on Liverpool, causing massive destruction to the city. One of the bombs struck the church and caused a fire that burned its interior and roof, leaving behind only the stone walls. The city chose to preserve the remains, and the church was officially Grade II listed and became a memorial to the casualties of WWII.

In 2007, the church was opened to the public and has become a much-loved community space since.

Today, the Bombed Out Church is much more than a historic landmark. It’s a place where people come together. Visitors can enjoy the garden bar or café, with all profits from these being used to maintain the space or attend one of their many events.

Beyond this, the church is currently involved in multiple community initiatives. Our favourite one is their school projects programme, which has been running since 2020. Through this, over 10,000 local students so far have had the chance to connect with the church’s history and take part in creative projects inspired by it.

St Luke’s team also often works together with organisations that support vulnerable groups, allowing them to use their space to host projects that raise awareness of their missions. They also partner with multiple groups around Liverpool and co-create events and exhibitions to make sure that the local communities are represented and celebrated.

Our Partnership

Our partnership with the Bombed Out Church started in 2024, when we donated our turf to the site for the very first time. Pleased with the results, the team at St Luke’s even wrote a blog highlighting the quality of the turf and how gestures like ours help this special place continue to thrive, bringing people together year after year.

At Online Turf, we’re always looking for ways to give back to our local community. That’s why we were more than happy to support the church again in 2025. By donating our turf for a second year, we hope to help the Bombed Out Church carry on spreading joy, protecting community spirit, and providing a green, welcoming space where people can connect, celebrate, and make lasting memories.

What makes this project even more meaningful is the site’s powerful history. As a memorial to those who lost their lives in World War II, the Bombed Out Church stands as a symbol of resilience - and we’re proud to play a small part in preserving its story and its future.

Why Does the Church Need Returfing Every Year?

Since St Luke’s Church was not originally designed to be an outdoor venue, the drainage that the space offers is quite limited.

On top of this, the church is in constant use, with thousands of visitors passing through every year, so the grass does not have enough time to recover from the heavy foot traffic.

While the turf you lay in your garden will be perfectly fine for many years, to keep the church in the best possible condition for upcoming events, celebrations, and weddings, returfing every year is necessary.
